Here is the List of Smartphones Getting Android Pie 9.0

Check that your smartphone is lucky enough to get Android Pie

Did you hear? Android Pie is a thing now. And we know that everyone will want it and want it as soon as possible. That’s how it works and that’s how we are wired. We want updates, we want them to be spectacular and we want them right now.

The reality of the situation is a bit different. Most phones made in the last 18 months will see Android Pie, but some of them will only get updated when we see the first developer preview for Android Q come along. It’s a lot easier for manufacturers to update their phones to a newer version, but it’s still not any better. That’s another article for another time, though. Which phones will get updated sometime in the next 12 months?

Pixel Smartphones are first to get Android Pie.

Let’s break it down by the major manufacturers of the phones we love.

1) Google

Google has already told us which phones get updated and which won’t.

  • Pixel 2
  • Pixel 2 XL
  • Pixel
  • Pixel XL

While not actually from Google, any Android One phones manufactured since October 2017 will also be updated.

And that’s it. Prior to the Pixel, Google promised two years of full support and three years of security updates for phones they sell under their own brand. The Nexus flagships are just about three years old. They were great phones but they won’t get Android Pie.

  • Nexus 6P
  • Nexus 5X

2) Android Beta Program Partners

For the first time ever other companies have joined Google in supporting the Android Beta Program. When it was started for Android Pie (then known simply as P) the following phones joined Google’s Pixel and Pixel 2 family in supporting it:

  • Sony Xperia XZ2
  • Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S
  • Nokia 7 Plus
  • Oppo R15 Pro
  • Vivo X21
  • OnePlus 6
  • Essential PH‑1

That means that every one of these phones should see a full-on update to Android Pie in the very near future. In fact, the Essential PH-1 is seeing its update at the same time the Pixel and Pixel 2 are!

3) Samsung

Samsung makes more models of a single flagship line like the Galaxy S each year than Google has made in total, but it’s also pretty easy to know which phones Samsung will update. Samsung offers four “premium” models each year. like 2018’s Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and the Galaxy Note 9.

  • Galaxy S9
  • Galaxy S9+
  • Galaxy Note 9
  • Galaxy S8
  • Galaxy S8+
  • Galaxy Note 8

All the other smartphones by Samsung will be the seemingly random phones that Samsung decides to update.

4) LG

Like Samsung, there are a few “important” models that get all the press coverage and plenty of other more inexpensive models that most of us aren’t talking about.

LG also mentioned some streamlining in the release cycle, which hopefully gives the development teams time to get an update out the door and have it be a good update.

  • LG G7 ThinQ
  • LG V30
  • LG V20
  • LG G6

Older models of LG are done seeing any attention and won’t see any updates:

  • LG V10
  • LG G5

5) Huawei/Honor

Huawei changes the way it redistributes and maintains phones running the EMUI operating system (Huawei’s version of Android) in 2017 and we think that’s going to be reflected when it comes to Android Pie updates.

  • Huawei P20
  • Huawei P10
  • Huawei Mate 10
  • Honor 9
  • Honor View 10 series
  • Huawei Mate 9

This includes the various Plus, Pro, and Porsche models as well, and because EMUI is so different than every other smartphone software available users will have no idea which version of Android they are running unless they look.

6) Motorola

Moto phones under Lenovo are now very slow in updates. Earlier Moto under Google was very fast in updates.

Motorola had a weird 2017. That’s putting it mildly.

Every one of those 2017 phones, as well as any we see in 2018, are expected to get Android Pie.

Lenovo has taken a lot of the fanfare surrounding Android version updates away and quietly builds them in the background.

List of expected Moto smartphones getting Android Pie are:

  • Moto G6
  • Moto G6 Play
  • Moto G6 Plus
  • Moto Z3
  • Moto Z3 Play
  • Moto Z2 Force Edition
  • Moto Z2 Play
  • Moto X4

7) Asus

Asus does not yet have a release schedule for Android 9.0 Pie, but it should have one ready within a few months. Android 9.0 Pie is slated to launch around the end of August.

  • Asus Zenfone 5Z
  • Asus Zenfone 5
  • Asus ROG Phone
  • Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1

Budget smartphone like Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 can also receive update but it can take more time.

8) Xiaomi

The Android 9.0 Pie beta is available to the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, and as such we expect it to be one of the first phones to get the consumer version of the software once it’s released.

  • Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S
  • Xiaomi Mi A1
  • Xiaomi Mi A2
  • Xiaomi Mi Max 2
  • Xiaomi Mi 6

As of now only these smartphones from Xiaomi likely to get Android Pie.

7) Nokia

Nokia is among the handful of manufacturers that have promptly rolled out updates to all of its smartphones irrespective of the price bracket they fall in. All of Nokia’s smartphones which are in circulation right now were either launched with Android Oreo out-of-the-box or received it much before even high-end smartphones from other market-leading brands. The Nokia phones which will get Android Pie update are:

  • Nokia 8 Sirocco
  • Nokia 8
  • Nokia 7 Plus
  • Nokia 7
  • Nokia X6 aka Nokia 6.1 Plus
  • Nokia 6.1
  • Nokia 6
  • Nokia X5
  • Nokia 5.1
  • Nokia 5
  • Nokia 3.1
  • Nokia 3
  • Nokia 2.1
  • Nokia 2
  • Nokia 1

8) OnePlus

Being one of the few brands that participated in the beta roll-out of Android Pie, OnePlus is likely to be an easy recipient of the latest update. While the few-months-old OnePlus 6 is certain to be a part of the Android Pie beneficiary club, OnePlus has promised that even older devices will be receiving the update.

  • OnePlus 6
  • OnePlus 5T
  • OnePlus 5
  • OnePlus 3T
  • OnePlus 3

9) Sony

As one of the companies struggling to cope with affordable and attractive smartphones from newer brands, Sony is not necessarily in its best shape. The wild winds, however, have not stopped Sony from bringing the latest update to new smartphones.

In terms of Android Oreo roll-out, Sony has been quick and the same is hoped from the upcoming updates. Here are all the Sony smartphones getting Android Pie update:

  • Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium
  • Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact
  • Sony Xperia XZ2
  • Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact
  • Sony Xperia XZ1
  • Sony Xperia XZ Premium
  • Sony Xperia XA2
  • Sony Xperia XA2 Plus
  • Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra

10) Oppo

Oppo wasn’t very well known outside Asia until the launch of the slider camera phone – Find X. The brand was also a part of Android Pie’s developer preview testing but it didn’t attract a lot of attention. So far, there’s only one phone which has been promised to get Android Pie:

  • Oppo R15 Pro

11) Vivo

This year was also special for Vivo, because of its X21 UD which was the first phone with an under-display fingerprint scanner, as well as the Vivo NEX with a pop-up selfie camera. Vivo was also a part of the Android Pie beta testing. The phones which are first to qualify for Android Pie:

  • Vivo X21 UD

12) Must mentions

These may be the companies we’re most familiar with in the west that sell Android phones, but they aren’t the only companies doing it. Out of the literally hundreds of models available, a few stand out and need mentioning.

  • OnePlus will update the 5 and 5T.
  • Sony’s high-end Xperia like the Zs and Xs from 2017 and 2018 will be updated, but other models probably won’t be.
  • We are not sure how changes in the company will affect HTC, but thinking all their phones as far back as the U11 and UBolt will see an update.
  • The BlackBerry KEYone probably won’t be upgraded to Android Pie, but we know the KEY2 will be.
  • Now that Nokia has committed to Android One across all of its devices, there’s a good chance many of the more expensive models, like the Nokia 7 and Nokia 8 Sirocco, will join the 7 Plus in Pie-land.
  • Razer Phone will also be updated to Android Pie.
  • Oppo and Vivo are very slow in this race but Oppo R15, R15 Pro and F7 are likely to receive Android Pie. Other the other hand, Vivo Nex, X21, X21 UD, V9 may also get Android Pie.

If your device is presently not listed above, do check back for updates at regular intervals.
